Why is TM better than other forms of meditation?
“Meditation” now refers to many very different methods and techniques. Apples must not be compared to oranges! What distinguishes the technique of TM is its complete naturalness and effortlessness, which triggers an automatic refinement process of mental activity and makes pure consciousness experienceable. Apart from that, TM is the meditation technique which has been scientifically researched most comprehensively and for the longest time, with proven positive effects in all areas of life.
What is a mantra?
In Transcendental Meditation, a mantra is a word without meaning that serves as a mental vehicle for refining or calming mental activity. The word “mantra” consists of “man” and “tra”. The two parts of the word can be translated directly as mental (man) instrument (tra). Important for the fulfillment of a mantras function as a mental instrument for the TM-technique is its meaninglessness as regards content and tonal suitability for the refinement process of the mental activity.
How many Mantras are there?
The number of mantras used in the TM technique is manageable, so that the TM teacher is not overwhelmed. What these mantras all have in common is that due to their tonal effect on the organism, they are suitable for people who lead an active life in society. There are also other mantras, such as the famous OM, which is only suitable as a meditation vehicle for people who lead a life withdrawn from society, i.e. for recluses or people in closed monastic communities.
How is my Mantra selected?
The selection of the mantra for a person participating in a TM course is based on clear and objective criteria. This subject matter is only imparted to those who train to become a certified TM teacher.
Why can I not learn TM online?
The instructions that form the core of a TM course are carried out step by step in one process: Instruction – execution and experience of the learner – next instruction, etc. The pace of this process varies from person to person and also depends on the current physiological condition of the learner. Therefore, the actual teaching process can only take place within the framework of an individual instruction.
Why is TM so expensive?
The technique of Transcendental Meditation is actually priceless, because the enrichment it brings to daily life, which extends throughout one’s lifetime, cannot be measured in money. The payment is a course fee which also includes an extensive follow-up program. Course participants pay for a professional service, not for TM. The amount of the course fee corresponds to the market in the respective country, compared to other professional course fees with similar personnel costs.
Who is Maharishi Mahesh Yogi?
See Where it comes from page.
Is TM rooted in Hinduism?
No, the TM technique is rooted in the Vedic tradition of ancient India (see Where it comes from page). “Hinduism” is a collective term coined by Europeans and Arabs for a multitude of religious directions and cults which they found on the Indian subcontinent. Historically, it is true that the Vedic tradition has influenced Hinduism time and again, and that the cultural environment of the Vedic tradition, called “Hinduism”, has found its way into its language and symbols. However, the TM technique is religiously neutral and is practiced by people of all religions. Often meditators, regardless of their religion, report a deepening of their religious experience and understanding.
Why is regular practice emphasised so much in TM?
The cumulative positive effects of TM are based on the alternation of deep, wakeful, pleasant rest during meditation, with dynamic activity and lively interactions in everyday life. Such variation is practically realised through regular meditation.

Can I combine TM with Yoga, Tai Chi or other methods of self development?
Of course yes – and why not! What’s important is not to use other such methods of promoting self-development during TM practice. During TM, you sit comfortably with your eyes closed and do nothing other than what you have learned in the introductory course. Everything else that you do outside of meditation, with open eyes, is good if it does you good!
